Babylon
It fell from within. It was not
conquered and defeated by another.
Session 8 Evil on a White Horse (Part 2)
In Session 7 we studied the characteristics of the antichrist. His personality traits and
goals that will drive him. In this study we will see the highlights of what he will be
doing during the Tribulation.
We have already seen how the antichrist
was introduced in Revelation 6:1-2. He
enters the stage there as a conqueror bent
on conquest. When the scriptures say he
will conquer it should be emphasized that
he will accomplish more than any other conqueror that has preceded him. He will
have the great power of Satan himself (The Dragon) energizing his military exploits.
We will now look into Daniel for a detailed flow of history concerning empires that
spans right up to the point of, and including the Antichrist’s empire. Please read
Daniel 7:1,4-8.
We will only lightly touch on and explain
the symbolism in these verses so don’t
get discouraged by all the wild animals
mentioned. If you research these verses
closely with other resources you will see
amazing details of history represented
that flowed exactly as prophesied. We are
only hitting the highlights here.
1. What empire does Daniel live in at the
moment he is writing this prophesy
down?
So, we see that verses 5 through 8 are in
Daniel’s future. Please review the
Sequence of Worldly Empires box for a
quick overview of how many scholars
interpret this scripture’s symbolism.
2. From what you know about history,
what is different about the Roman empire
from all the previous empires?
There you have a brief overview of world
empires.
Revelation 6:1-2 NIV
1 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I
heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder,
“Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its
rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a
conqueror bent on conquest.
Daniel 7:1,4-8 NIV
1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a
dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying in bed.
He wrote down the substance of his dream.
4 “The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I
watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the
ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind
of a human was given to it.
5 “And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a
bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its
mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of
flesh!’
6 “After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one
that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like
those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority
to rule.
7 “After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me
was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It
had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and
trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the
former beasts, and it had ten horns.
8 “While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was
another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of
the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the
eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
Sequence of Worldly Empires
25,26
Verse 4. Lion - Babylonian Empire
Verse 5. Bear - Medo-Persian Empire
Verse 6. Leopard - Greek Empire
Verse 7. Ten Horns - Roman Empire - Different from all the rest
Verse 8. The Little Horn - The Final Antichrist Empire
The Antichrist Leader.
It has characteristics from all the
previous world empires.
It also has
power from the Dragon.
He will achieve dominance over every tribe, people, language and nation.
A covenant or treaty.
Exists
3. Using logic and what we learned from the last session who does the “mouth that
spoke boastfully” sound like?
Please read Revelation 13:7 to
see how John expands on the
description of the last empire.
4. What stands out about this
description of the final empire
to you?
Please read Revelation 13:7.
5. What is the Antichrist’s final military/political achievement that no previous world
empire has accomplished?
While the first of his reign will
be characterized by military
goals another early activity can
be seen linked to his nature of
being deceptive and appearing
as a man of peace. Concerning
the Antichrist’s activities there
is one information packed
passage in Daniel 9 that we will
review a few times in this
session. Please read Daniel
9:27.
6. What will this Deceptive
Diplomat confirm?
7. The “will confirm” and “and
raise the bar” phrases almost
sound like the treaty is already
__________.
Daniel 9:27 NLT
27 The ruler will make a treaty with the people for a period of one
set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the
sacrifices and offerings. And as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he
will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the
fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him.”
Daniel 9:27 NIV
27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the
middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.
And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes
desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.
Revelation 13:1-2 NIV
1 The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast
coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten
crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2 The
beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear
and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power
and his throne and great authority.
Revelation 13:7 NIV
7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to
conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people,
language and nation.
Word Study
The phrase he will confirm in Daniel 9:27 can be translated from a
Hebrew word/phrase (wə·hiḡ·bîr) (רי ִ֥ ְג ִה ְו תי ֛ ִר ְםי ֖ ִבּ ַרָל
) has one exact
occurrence in all the scriptures and that would be this verse. It can
be translated “make a firm”. You might find the modern translation
obtained by sending this Hebrew text into Google Translate very
interesting: And raise the bar
Word Study
The word seven in Daniel 9:27 is generally agreed upon by most
scholars as seven years. If you read previous verses in chapter 9 you
will see reference to a total of 70 weeks in association to the nation
of Israel. You will also see reference that 62 of those weeks (434
years) separate the command to rebuild the second temple and the
coming of the Messiah. This was perfectly fulfilled by Jesus birth!
You can also see a reference to “seven sevens” which locates the
destruction of the second temple at 70 AD. So, 62 + 7 totals 69
seven years. This leaves a remaining seven-year period mentioned
in verse 27 which is the Tribulation period.
He will stand in the temple
proclaiming himself to be God.
Run to the mountains.
He looks like a lamb (Like the lamb of God Jesus, a Christian leader)
Notice the "but".... he TALKS like the Dragon (Satan)
Now we see how the Antichrist betrays the Israel nation. Please read Matthew 24:15
and 2 Thessalonians 2:4. He will betray them with a most evil of ways.
8. What does the Antichrist do
in the middle of the seven-year
tribulation that is the height of
blasphemy?
9. Jesus talks specifically to future Tribulation Christians in Matthew 24:15 and tells
them to do what?
It almost seems that the temple may be referenced in a part of the treaty that is signed
at the beginning of the Tribulation. Building the Third Temple is an important goal of
many orthodox Jews in Israel currently. Preparations are being made even now.
Perhaps the building of the third temple will be a condition of the treaty that will coax
and deceive the Jewish people into accepting a treaty with the Palestinians to achieve
“peace” finally. Remember how Daniel 8:25 mentions that “When they feel secure,
he will destroy many”? It looks like he will attempt to use a peace time condition
like the long-awaited peace in the middle east to attempt to kill all Jewish people.
Why else would Jesus tell his future followers in Judea to flee immediately at the
point they see the blasphemy of the Antichrist?
The Antichrist is also busy doing other things during the tribulation. Now we
investigate his activities with religion and the world economy. As we do this, we also
must first introduce his right-hand man called the False Prophet. The False Prophet
seems to be tasked with accomplishing plans for the Antichrist that are not military or
diplomacy related. Please
read Revelation 13:11-12a
to get an understanding of
this man.
10. It would appear that the False Prophet will look like one thing, but sound quite the
opposite. What does the False Prophet look like on the surface (by position or title)?
11. Who does the False Prophet sound like?
Revelation 13:11-12a NIV
11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two
horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all the
authority of the first beast on its behalf…
Matthew 24:15 NIV
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination
that causes desolation,’[a] spoken of through the prophet
Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in
Judea flee to the mountains.
2 Thessalonians 2:4 NIV
4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is
called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s
temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
Sets up an "image" in honor of
the Antichrist and gets people
to worship the image and him.
Great signs such as bringing fire down from heaven
and "giving breath" to the image.
They will implement a worldwide religion based on the worship of the Antichrist and
his image. Forced worship under penalty of death. An unprecedented achievement.
Economic System
Like his master he will be deceptive to the people. Now we can look into what the
first task the False Prophet will execute on behalf of the Antichrist. Read Revelation
13:12b-15. Please note that a passage preceding this one describes a fatal head wound
for the Antichrist (V3&4).
12. What is the first
effort of the False
Prophet?
This effort on the part of
the False Prophet seems
to coordinate what we
see in 2 Thessalonians 2:4.
13. What are the tools the False Prophet uses to achieve the goal?
14. Apparently, something is established at a worldwide level at this point. What will
the Antichrist and the False Prophet achieve?
Now we look at phase
two of the False
Prophet’s agenda. Please
read Revelation
13:16-18.
15. Here we see the
establishment of a world
wide
________________. Another unprecedented achievement from a worldly
standpoint. This is apparently based on aspects of a single number: 666.
Now we describe the end of the story of the Antichrist. We have not delved into all the
details of his actions and accomplishments. Please remember these words from the
last of Daniel 9:27 “until the fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on
him.” We have also read these words from Daniel 8:25 “Yet he will be destroyed, but
not by human power”. We will
need to look at these passages as
well: Daniel 7:11 and Revelation
19:20
Revelation 13:12b-15 NIV
….and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,
whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 And it performed great
signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in
full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs it was given power
to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of
the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast
who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast
was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so
that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the
image to be killed.
Revelation 13:16-18 NIV
16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and
slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,
17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,
which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This
calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the
number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is
666.
Daniel 7:11 NIV
11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the
horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its
body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.
Gathering the entire military of all
the nations of earth to attack Jesus
on the white horse and his army.
They are captured and thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.
16. What is the final military
act of the Antichrist?
This is the scene of
Armageddon and it is The Day
of the Lord we have already
studied. The “rider on the horse” is our Lord Jesus Christ. Many scholars propose that
we (Christians both Pre-Tribulation and Tribulation) are the army coming with him!
Although really, we just observe Jesus execute judgement and thus ending the war…
17. What is the final fate of the Antichrist and False Prophet?
Wrap up
As we saw in the last study there is a lot of information on the Antichrist. Some
details were not covered here but the broad overview has been presented. In a later
study we will bring current events (as of Spring 2020) into our study to see if we can
detect foreshocks of these and other prophesies we will have studied. In that session
we will broach the subject of the mysterious number of the Antichrist that must be
calculated by the wise, 666. Now we rewind the clock on the Tribulation to the point
where the Antichrist has not quite consolidated all of his world power. Next, we study
the Red Horse of war.
Revelation 19:19-20 NIV
19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies
gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his
army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet
who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had
deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and
worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the
fiery lake of burning sulfur.
